CBS News reported that Mike Huckabee addressed the situation in Pakistan following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto by extending “our sincere concern and apologies for what has happened in Pakistan.” Now, in fairness, they also reported that later Huckabee's campaign issued a clarifying statement that he "intended to extend his deepest sympathies to the people of Pakistan when he used the word 'apologies.'"
Well, okay, we all suffer from foot-in-mouth syndrome occasionally. He probably did indeed misspeak. Still ... wouldn't it be something if -- despite the outward appearances of strong party support for the narrow-minded, childish, "might-makes-right" foreign policy of Bush & Co -- Republicans, deep down, have misgivings?
Al-Qaida spokesman Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid not only claimed responsibility for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, but added that they considered her "the most precious American asset." Obviously this tragedy is another sidebar to Bush's naive "war on terror." The Bush foreign policy is and has been long on belligerence and short on diplomacy. America is hated by more people now than at anytime in recent memory, and our president, in some polls, has been ranked among the top of world leaders who are considered a threat to peace.
Back to Huckabee's original statement: I agree that we should be concerned about the situation in Pakistan, and the rest of the world as well. And we should be learning from the current mismanagement of US foreign policy, and seek a new, more practical approach. Without doubt, Bush's approach has made the world a more violent place.
Oh, Doug, you are just one of those "blame America first" morons!
No, not hardly. But I do believe in healthy introspection. As a nation, we need to get our own house in order. We have lost a good deal of our moral authority in the world's eyes.
